Where does this path lead?

So what does it mean when your boss takes you into his confidence by telling you he is dissatisfied with his role and has told his supervisor (n+2) that he's ready for a change.

We have gone through roller coaster of org changes over the past 4 years.
A lot of it is still sorting itself out. After a foreign buyout, our IT organization has been gutted, with about 2/3s of the senior staff being managed out or atrophied out. Those of us left have moved from highly technical roles with authority and ownership to contributing analysts, in some cases, merely note takers. It would be an understatement to say that we're all feeling disaffected.

My supervisor hired me into this company, 8 years ago.
He is one of the most positive and business savvy IT pro's I know.
He also is one of the best bosses I have had; he really cares about his people and knows what they are capable of and does his best to see that they contribute in the most meaningful way the are able to.
During this period, his career has saw-toothed from director of one technology stack, to part of a 2 man PMO, to Senior Director of our all of our software packages support teams, to Senior Director in charge of the technology stack and others, to finally, Director of those of us Architects-cum-Analysts.

The end game is clear if my boss, and dare I say my friend, has uttered the words that shall not be spoken.
"I no longer like it here"
